When the food arrives, measure its temperature with a food thermometer. It is the only way to know that food is safe to eat.
Home-delivered supplies, subscription meal kits, and mail-order foods can be convenient. However, take steps to ensure food safety is part of the package, too. Food delivered to your home should be handled properly to prevent food poisoning.
Arrange delivery for when someone is home; that way, food can be quickly refrigerated instead of being left out. If you can’t be there, see if a neighbor can. I wrote about my way of ordering food online here.
Find a safe place for delivery if no one will be home when the food arrives. Food should be left in a cool, shaded, and protected place, where insects and rodents cannot access it. Tell the company where you want your box to be left.
Safe delivery and receipt of food
Examine the box and packing material. When you receive your delivery, look for labels on the box that says “Keep Refrigerated” or “Keep Frozen” if you purchased perishable foods, such as meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, or dairy products.
Ensure the company has used thermal insulation material and dry ice or frozen gel packs to keep perishable foods cold during transportation.
Notify the company if the temperature of the food upon arrival is over 40 ° F. Don’t eat any of the foods and don’t even taste them to see if they are safe. Food may taste, look and smell good and still not be safe to eat. If in doubt, throw them out.
Concerning the identification of the goods, however, we point out the verification of the following aspects that are not always controlled:
- The type of product with respect to what has been agreed with the technical specifications. It frequently happens that, for example, in the case of distributors of food products, food from a manufacturer is delivered rather than another. It follows that if my hazard analysis was made based on the ingredients and related allergens of one product, it is likely that it is not valid for this other, especially for products with multi ingredients such as cooked ham, a vegetable cube, etc.
- The reception phase is essential to start the traceability of any company, whether small or large. Sometimes the batch of raw materials is also reported on the documents accompanying the goods. In this case, it is important to verify an actual correspondence between what is reported on the documents and what is present on the product.
Safe food handling
Wash your hands at least 20 seconds with sanitizer before, during, and after preparing food and before eating. Wash utensils, cutting boards, and countertops in hot soapy water after use.
Keep raw meat, poultry, eggs, fish, and seafood away from other foods, and use separate cutting boards for these ingredients.
Make sure you know how long leftovers will keep in the refrigerator or freezer.
In conclusion, the control of the receipt of goods is a phase of primary importance for any food company. Its implications in terms of legal, quality, and food safety must be entrusted to adequately trained personnel.
Although there are many benefits of ordering food online as I wrote before. We also have to make sure that our food is handled in a safe way and not just by the company we order from but also in our own homes.
